    National Infant Immunization Week and Vaccination Week in the Americas (NIIW/VWA) 2010 Inaugural Event & Professional Conference

     

    NIIW/VWA 2010 Inaugural Event

    On Monday, April 26, 2010, over 125 professionals—including doctors, nurses, immunization program specialists, public health officials, and policy-makers—from the Mexican and U.S. border states, as well as representatives of federal health agencies and national and regional non-profit health advocacy organizations   celebrated the launching of National Infant Immmunization Week/Vaccination Week of the Americas at the New Mexico Farm and Ranch Heritage Museum. The New Mexico Office of Border Health (NM-OBH) staff, and the U.S.-Mexico Border Health Commission (USMBHC) Outreach Office Coordinator, worked together with the USMHBC Mexican Section’s Chihuahua State Coordinating Office (CSCO), the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO), Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, NMDOH Immunization Program, New Mexico Immunization Coalition, Doña Ana County Immunization Coalition, and other selected healthcare services providers to host an inaugural event that was held in Las Cruces this year. The events began with an Inaugural Ceremony, for which New Mexico Secretary of Health Dr. Alfredo Vigil served as moderator. The ceremony featured Color Guards from both the U.S. and Mexico, and included addresses by local, state, national and international agencies and organizations. Las Cruces Mayor Ken Miyagishima, and other dignitaries from both sides of the border were present at the kick-off event, including:  Roberto Rodríguez Hernández, Cónsul General de México; Marjorie McColl Petty, Director, Region VI, Department of Health and Human Services;  Dr. Jon Kim Andrus, Deputy Director, Pan American Health Organization; Dr. Bruce San Filippo, Chief Medical Officer, Memorial Medical Center, BHC Member- New Mexico; and Dr. Octavio Rodrigo Martínez Pérez, Secretary of State Health Services in Chihuahua.

    NIIW/VWA 2010 Professional Conference: Improving Immunization Strategies in the U.S.-Mexico
    Border Region Conference

    A professional conference entitled “Improving Immunization Strategies in the U.S.-Mexico Border Region” followed the inaugural event. The conference highlighted innovative approaches to increasing infant and child immunizations among at-risk populations along the U.S.-Mexico border and was honored to have First Lady Barbara Richardson at the event, presenting Immunization Awards to outstanding New Mexico Immunization Providers. New Mexico Office of Border Health Director, Paul Dulin, served as the moderator for this event, which included presentations on Regional Perspectives on Vaccination Week in the Americas and the Expanded Program on Immunizations; Immunization Best Practices and Vaccine Update; Immunization Data Collection in Mexico; How the Immunization System Works in Mexico; and panel presentations on New Mexico Department of Health Model innovative programs like the Perinatal Hepatitis B and Hospital Collaborative, The WIC Immunization Linkage, and Movie Mania. The program ended with excellent speakers Dr. Hector Ocaranza and Licensed Nurse Carmen Escajeda, discussing successful immunization practices in Anthony, New Mexico and Juarez, Chihuahua, respectively, and a final word on Vaccine Safety and Risk Communication from Dr. Melinda Wharton, Deputy Director, National Center for Immunization and Respiratory Diseases, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
